Switzerland LanguageThere is no such thing as one Swiss language. Switzerland has a series of Swiss languages, the predominat one is Swiss German, spoken by about 60% of the population, followed by French, Italian and Romantsch. All four languages are offical Swiss languages and most laws and official communication is translated in all 4 languages. Even thoug, there are less than 10 million inhabitants in Switzerland the language is not a big issue and the different language groups can communicate quite easily, as most Swiss speak at least two of the national languages. The difference between the German official language for Switzerland, and the Swiss German language is that the first is very similar to the German language spoken in Germany, with only a few specifically Swiss words, whilst the Swiss German spoken language is quite different. Germans from northern Germany can not understand the Swiss German language, whilst the Germans from the southern part of Germany and Bavaria seem to have a lot less difficulty, as their local German dialects are similar and sometimes even use exactly the same vocabulary.
